Reason #7685 why I am a bad person:

Remember my SIL? The totally conservative, Palin-lovin', insane blog ranting stay at home Mom who hates anything "Big Government" and doesn't believe in ANY government benefits and that hard working people can make it on their own if they just work hard enough? And that the public option for health care is crazy? And that Planned parenthood is evil? Her?

Well, last week her husband got fired from his job. He'd been having conflict with his management team and it didn't work out. Obviously. So they have three kids, lots o' debt, she doesn't work and he just lost his job. So she told AH she was really glad his boss lied and said it was mutual so they could get Unemployment Benefits and apply for foodstamps and she was signing her kids up for low-income kids MediCare. And then my head exploded because YEAH it's nice to have a SAFETY NET when you need it, isn't it? This is a good thing to have and for our society work towards. The hypocrisy is seriously burning me up.

And here's the part that makes me bad. I'm kind of secretly glad this happened so maybe it can give her some empathy and compassion and respect for tax-based benefits and how it feels to have kids and no resources. Which is shitty, but how else can you find out how it feels? I always find it interesting that those who are closest to the edge of needing these types of programs are often shouting the loudest about them being a waste of money. We'll see if it turns her around or what kind of pretzel logic she may employ to make her case special and different.
