Good moments and odd moments this weekend:

A friend babysat Friday night so we got to catch the tail end of my friends band AND drink a Rogue Dead Guy Ale and then wander over to a free showing of "I've Loved You So Long" (the movie's entire palette was grey/periwinkle/naples yellow)with smuggled in chinese food (have not done that since my Vancouver days) and eat and hold hands. It was just what the marriage doctor ordered.

Cringworthy Parenting Moment #34567:
At an Indian restaurant on Saturday, one of the (East Indian) waiters tried to make Simone smile or laugh or something but she played shy, as she sometimes does. "I think she is afraid of my dark face" he smiled. What? No! I spluttered something like "No! No way! She's met..." and trailed off because there was just no good way to finish that sentence. Lord.

Odd Parenting Moment 5675:
In North Carolina, Sunday morning is the only time to hit places like Trader Joe's and the mall, because everyone is at church, which is awesome for heathens like me. Which would explain why I was cooling my heels in the poshest mall in Durham at 10:48 this morning, waiting for the damn stores to open so I could finish JeansQuest 2009. I was with Simone so with some trepidation I approached the weird indoor mall playground, populated by Combi and Bugaboo strollers and supermodel Moms. Simone didn't care that the kids were mostly older, she just barreled on in and did her thing. I really really love that about her. She touched a 4-year old boy on the hand at one point who had a serious fit and his Dad said "She's little. She doesn't know any better." I know he was trying to be polite or something but dude - we're in a playground. Children touch. Don't they? Ask all the crazy ladies using the built in hand sanitizers compulsively.

JeansQuest 2009:
Despite the fact that I was wrangling a 13 month old, which meant restricting myself to only 3 pairs of jeans to try on because then she tripped and hit her head on a clothes rack, after which she cried for 10 minutes really loudly, I managed to find really really good jeans. For $32. Despite the fact that I was willing to spend $120.

HairQuest 2009:
I got my hair cut and "color glazed" today because the gray is just shocking now. First time I have colored in about 7 years or so. It looks very very nice. I look all professional like. And my new hairdresser is so amazing. She is from Guyana which I now want to visit. I only vaguely knew it was in South America before we talked about it in depth and I got to get my Geography on, you know? It's a shame and a pity what I don't know.

This I do know: watch the documentary "The Education of Shelby Knox" if you didn't see it on POV already. Awesome teen takes on the sex education laws of Texas and it's abstinence only policy. First and only "celeb" I've every FB friended...
