Just so you don't think I'm all about the television, I will report on a cultural outing. I went to see Miranda July read on Friday night. We go way back, MJ and I, she just doesn't know it. I saw some of her earlier performances like Love Diamond in Vancouver and others here in Portland and at Yo Yo a Go Go in 1999. I obsessively tracked her short films and even submitted one of mine to her rad film chainletter (It's on the Ball and Chain compilation) way back. And of course "Me and You and Everyone We Know"...She just gets this odd yearning way we have of wanting to connect and failure that I love and feel unsettled by at the same time. So she has a new book - look at the website! and I was hoping she may do some kind of performance piece maybe. But it was a pretty straight reading. Except it was in Portland, in a beautiful church and she had her friend Becky Stark (from Lavender Diamond) come and sing songs and I love Becky Stark - in real life her voice is so pure and clear it was unbelievable. So there. Sometimes I read too. Oh! And sometimes I write about what I read, like the new Sassy book...
